Surrounding buildings aren’t fully covered by your property insurance unless they’re attached. If your home is damaged by a covered loss, garages, buildings and other structures may also be affected.
If your home or mobile home is insured under a Farm Bureau policy, there is a $2,500 limit included for surrounding buildings. If the value of your surrounding structures exceeds that amount, it is important to insure them separately. A Farm Bureau agent can help you choose the coverage that best fits your needs and budget:
Replacement Cost — Pays the full amount to repair or replace the damaged area of the structure, without regard to depreciation. You must insure your structure for at least 80 percent of the replacement cost, and replacement cost must be indicated in your policy. Because it provides better coverage, replacement cost insurance costs a bit more.
Actual Cash Value (ACV) — Will reimburse you for covered losses to your home up to its current value ― the age, condition and worth of your structure are taken into account when settling losses.
It is also important to include personal liability insurance coverage in case someone is injured while visiting your property or you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while away from your home. For increased liability coverage, consider adding umbrella liability insurance.
The cost of your insurance, your premium, depends on the coverage you need and any discounts available to you. By insuring your surrounding structures in combination with personal property, liability, vehicle and other insurance needs, you can save money with our one-deductible, customizable package policy, Farm Bureau Member's Choice.
