Moving Forward After Losing a Loved One

The death of a spouse or other loved one can naturally cause an array of emotions. Processing those feelings – while also being there for others and making final arrangements – takes your time and energy. That’s why it’s important to ask family and friends for help. We empathize with how you are feeling and offer our support during this time of personal loss.

One step at a time
One way we can offer support is with information. Our Moving Forward After Losing a Loved One checklist includes a detailed list of the documents and other official paperwork you’ll need as you move through this process. From locating the will to contacting financial institutions, changing beneficiaries to re-titling deeds and policies, having the information you need at your fingertips can help to ease the situation.

Next steps
When it comes to filing the life insurance claim, we make the process simple and manageable.

Start by contacting your loved one's insurance company. If he or she had a Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company1 policy, you can locate an agent near you for assistance or access the necessary forms to initiate the claim process right here on FBFS.com. If you have questions, please contact us toll-free at 800-247-4170.

You will need to return the following:
– Certified death certificate
– Completed Beneficiary Statement (includes list of other requirements)
– Original policy if available
– Payment Option Election Form if applicable

Soon after filing the life insurance claim with Farm Bureau, you will receive a check (for proceeds under $10,000) or a checkbook with personalized checks (for proceeds $10,000 or more), along with information about our Living Tradition Account®. This is a free, interest-bearing account established for you as the beneficiary until you feel comfortable making decisions about the future. Just as we were there for your loved one, we are here for you.

Resources for you
All the forms you need to file a Farm Bureau life insurance claim are available on the right side of your screen. There, you’ll also find letters you can personalize as you gather the information you need to file the life insurance claim and make other final arrangements. You’ll find letters for creditors, Social Security, employers, member organizations and the Veterans Administration.
