Young Drivers
   Print-friendly Verison
At Farm Bureau Financial Services we're concerned about the safety of all drivers – including young, less experienced drivers.

Beyond the fundamentals of operating a vehicle, the innocent distractions that occur with multiple passengers, late night driving and adverse weather conditions can complicate things even further when you're learning to drive. Add peer pressure, reckless driving and/or substance use to the mix, and the risks increase dramatically.

It's a fact: setting rules or guidelines helps young drivers stay focused and safe.

Statistics illustrate the need for structure and clearly communicated expectations – unpopular as they may be – as young drivers earn the freedom and privilege of driving alone:
  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people from 15 to 20 years of age. 1
  • In 2001, 14 percent of all drivers involved in fatal crashes were between 15 and 20 years old. 1
  • In 2001, 25 percent of the young drivers between 15 and 20 years of age who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were intoxicated. 1

You've probably seen or heard more statistics like these than you care to. But, when you're personally involved with helping a young driver become a safe and experienced driver, the statistics become personal. Maybe your young driver is your son or daughter. Perhaps they're a neighbor or a friend. Maybe the young driver is you.

Regardless, we want to help young drivers prepare to be the best they can be, and have compiled a collection of resources that we hope will be helpful as you – or someone you care about – learn to drive safely.

Create a Safe Driving Pledge
Identifying and agreeing to live by a set of "road rules" that works for your family is one way of ensuring an understanding that driving is a privilege that must be respected. By creating -- and agreeing to -- a document like the one we provide here, parents and teens set basic expectations and consequences for driving performance long before any issues present themselves.
