What is Renter’s Insurance?

Renter’s insurance is a form of property insurance designed specifically to meet the needs of people who do not own their home. Whether you live in a house, duplex or apartment, renter’s insurance covers losses to your personal property. It helps provide the security of knowing that if you lost everything today in a covered loss, you wouldn’t be forced to start from scratch tomorrow.

What are Some Considerations When Purchasing Renter’s Insurance?
  • What is the value of your personal property? A Farm Bureau  Home Inventory Kit may be a useful resource to help you record your property and its value.
  • Do you have any special items such as jewelry, cameras or electronics that may need extended coverage? Be sure to visit with your Farm Bureau agent about such items.
  • Be sure to add liability insurance coverage in the event someone is injured while visiting your home or in case you accidentally injure someone or damage their property during personal activities away from your home.
  • Do you want Replacement Cost or Actual Cash Value?
    • Replacement Cost – If you have replacement cost insurance, Farm Bureau will pay you the full amount of what it would cost to replace the damaged item(s). Even if the item(s) has depreciated in value, you will receive the amount of money it would cost to replace it today with a brand new item(s). Limitations apply to items that are worn out or obsolete.
    • Actual Cash Value (ACV) – With ACV, you will receive only what your damaged item(s) is worth. For example, if your refrigerator is 10 years old and is damaged beyond repair, Farm Bureau would pay you for the current value of your 10-year-old refrigerator, which would be less than it would cost to replace it with a brand new refrigerator.
Because it provides better coverage, replacement cost coverage is typically more expensive. Be sure to visit with a Farm Bureau agent to determine which coverage is best for your situation.

What Types of Coverage are Available?

Provides broader coverage than the Named Causes of Loss policy. This policy insures your residence against direct physical loss, unless the cause of loss is specifically excluded in the policy.

What are Some Extra Coverages Available?

  • Loss of Use– Covers additional living expense if your home is not fit to live in because of a covered loss.
  • Property Loss Assessment– Coverage is provided for the policyholder’s share of loss assessment charged during the policy period by a corporation or association of property owners.

What is an Optional Coverage Available?

Earthquake Coverage– Covers direct loss caused by an earthquake.

Note:  Liability coverage for bodily injury or property damage to others is not included in the Renters insurance coverage. Look in the Related Links for additional information about Liability insurance.
