Reinvent Your Career with 6 Successful Tips

February 23, 2016

Rather than staying stuck in a rut, take the opportunity to decide what you really want. Maybe your job isn’t working out like you had hoped, or maybe you are starting to second-guess your career. Both of those things are okay! The best part about knowing your job isn’t working is knowing that you can do something about it. You have the skills and the knowledge that could really make a difference, so why not give it a shot? Find out what you can do to reinvent your career.

Make a List of Your Passions

When you are looking to reinvent your career, the best place to start is by figuring out what you enjoy most. Your hobbies and pastimes are great clues that can lead you to a new job that you will love. What are your favorite parts of your day? Why do you enjoy them? Determine a way to find a job involving these things. On the flip side, think about the aspects of your current job you’d like to avoid in a new career.

Determine Your Biggest Asset

Figure out what you are best at, and focus on that. Whether it’s talking with people, helping your community or managing a business, you should find a way to combine your passions and your strongest skills.

Look for Potential Jobs and List Skills

Once you have a general idea of what you would like to do, do a little job hunting and see what’s out there. You may find that there are other skills you may need to land your dream job. Make a list of the skills you have yet to learn and start working to develop them.

Find a Mentor

Having someone on your side as you start a new journey can help you tremendously. It’s important to have someone who can give you guidance during this transition in your life. Meet with your contacts and see if you can find someone who can give you guidance in your new career. This will give you an in-depth look into your new potential job.

Take a Leap

Just because you’ve spent years in one job doesn’t mean you have to stick with that career until retirement. Have faith and go for it. It isn’t easy to switch to a new career path. There will be bumps along the way, but you can overcome them if you are truly passionate about reinventing your career.

Be Patient

Nothing is perfect immediately. It may take some time to build up enough credibility to land your dream job. And once you do, you’ll need to work your way up, just like you did in your current career. Be persistent, and remember that with every step you take, you are learning the ropes of your new career and moving toward a happier, more fulfilling life!

Taking the plunge into a new career is scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Don’t know where to start? Farm Bureau Financial Services can help.
