No Response to an Accident? Take These Steps Before Leaving the Scene

Sep 22, 2025 1 min read

Sometimes, the police won’t respond to a minor collision. That can mean you’re on your own after an accident. Here's what to do after a car accident so you cover your bases before leaving.

Be Prepared

You should always have your driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance with you whenever you’re driving. It’s also a good idea to have a pen and some paper, in case you’re in an accident where there’s no cell phone coverage.

Pull Over

If your car is drivable, move it to the side of the road so you’re safer and other drivers can pass.

Check on Everyone

Make sure you aren’t hurt and that any passengers in your car are OK. Call 911 if anyone needs medical care.

Assess the Situation

You’ll want to exchange information with the other driver. However, if you think there’s a possibility you’re being carjacked, drive to a safe place. If road rage is involved, it may be best not to engage with the other driver. Try to safely document the situation with photos and videos.

Call the Police

If the accident is serious, anyone is hurt or you don’t feel safe, call 911.

Collect Information

Take pictures of the other driver’s license registration and insurance information. Ask for their name and phone number. Provide your information to the other driver. If it’s a hit-and-run accident and you see it happen, take a photo of the car and, if possible, the license plate.

Ask any witnesses for their names and contact information so you can get in touch with them if you need to after the accident.

Record the Damage

Take photos or videos of any dents, scratches, broken glass or parts or other damage. Make a note of the weather, traffic and road conditions.

Leave Information if Needed

If you hit a parked car and you can’t find the driver, leave a note with your name, address and phone number. Keep your own record of the make and model of the car, what damage occurred and where the accident happened.

File a Report

Even if the police don’t come to the scene, you should still file an accident report with the police department that has jurisdiction over the area where the accident occurred. With many police departments, you can file this report online. If not, you’ll need to go to the police station to do it.

It’s possible to file a car insurance claim without a police report, but it’s best to have a police report on file.

Contact Your Insurance Company

You’ll want to get the claims process started right away, so you can get your car repaired as soon as possible. Your insurance agent or company can tell you what steps to take.

Do You Have the Coverage You Need?

It’s important to make sure you’re protected against the expenses of an auto accident. If you’re not sure what coverage you have, or it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed your policy, reach out to Farm Bureau. We can review your auto insurance coverage and recommend any changes.
