If you’re shopping for home security cameras, it might feel overwhelming. You’ll find so many different brands and configurations to choose from, it can be hard to figure out what you need and how much you should pay.

Here are some key points to consider that can help you when you’re narrowing down your options.

What Type of Home Security Camera Do You Need?

The location of your camera will help you figure out what type best fits your needs.

  • Front or back doors: A doorbell camera is probably your top choice, since you get the benefits of the camera plus notifications when someone rings your doorbell.
  • Most other areas: You will probably want a wireless camera.
  • Lighted areas: If you want a security camera in a place where you already have floodlights, you can swap out the floodlight for a floodlight camera.

Wired vs. Wireless Home Security Cameras

Doorbell cameras can typically draw power from the wiring for the doorbell, so you don’t need to think about how they get power.

Some wireless home security cameras can be plugged in to run on your electrical connection, but you may need to hire an electrician.

Others can use a small rechargeable battery for power. Some models have solar panels that charge the battery during the day. If you’re looking at models with rechargeable batteries, check to see how often they need to be recharged. Some need weekly charging while others can last a year.

How’s Your Wi-Fi?

Your security cameras will probably run off your home Wi-Fi. Go to the places where you want to install cameras with your smartphone and make sure you have a signal. If not, you’ll need to decide if you want to change the placement of your cameras or boost your Wi-Fi.

Cloud Storage or Local Storage

Cloud storage is convenient, but storage fees can add up. You can pay up to $30 per month, depending on the plan you choose and the number of cameras you have. Some home security systems with cameras let you store your footage on a microSD card instead, so you don’t have to pay storage fees.

Do You Need a Subscription?

You’re probably planning to install and monitor your security system yourself. But some systems include optional monitoring by professionals. If this is a feature you’re interested in, make sure you look at systems that offer it and review their pricing.

Some insurance companies offer discounts on home insurance for security systems, but those discounts are generally for monitored systems only.

Do You Want AI Features?

If you choose a subscription, you may be able to add AI-based recognition that can identify people, faces, packages, cars or trucks and animals. You may also be able to use natural language to instruct AI to search through your footage, instead of having to look through it yourself.

Get the Protection You Need for Your Property

A strong security system can help protect your home, but you also need to make sure you’re covered for other issues that could crop up. Reach out to Farm Bureau and make sure you have the home insurance coverage you need to protect your property and possessions.
